Originally from a farming community in rural Oklahoma, Clay grew up in a high school graduating class of just 25 students, including 5 exchange students. Recognizing early on that farming wasn't his path, he was drawn to the visual appeal of CD cases, t-shirts, and magazine designs. This interest led him to pursue a digital design path in college.
After earning a BFA in Graphic Design, Clay spent five years in corporate graphic design, working in-house for major retailers Walmart and Petco. Seeking creative freedom, he then launched his own design studio, Propaganda Creative. In 2013, an unexpected opportunity arose to open a cafe, marking a significant career shift. This venture, Young Hickory, expanded to a second location in 2018.
Throughout his time as a cafe owner, Clay handled all facets of the business, including design and promotional work for the brand—a task that was always his favorite aspect of the business. After navigating nine years in the hospitality industry, including the difficult landscape of the pandemic, he closed the cafes in early 2022.
This experience led Clay full circle, back to his true passion: full-time design. Now, he offers his expertise in branding and graphic design, combining years of diverse experience with a renewed focus on his original creative calling.
